Addenbrookes chooses Opaque

30th August 2017

Scanflex Opaque protective apparel, featuring a new technology bi-layer lighweight material called Kiarmor has been acquired by the Vascular Surgery team at Addenbrooke’s Hospital from the UK supplier, Vertec Scientific. Pictured during a follow up visit by Vertec are (from left): Consultant Vascular Surgeons Paddy Coughlin, Chandana Wijewardena, Jonathan Boyle, Simon Kreckler and Seamus Harrison with Main Theatre Lead Radiographer Rachel Clark,

Proven by measurements made by independent organisations including the National Physical Laboratory, bi-layer KIarmor is lighter and more flexible than any comparable material today, providing 40% greater protection against absorbed dose than other lead-free or low-lead composite material, and 20% better than standard lead-based equivalents. With the number of procedures performed under fluoroscopy more than tripling since 1996, medical workers’ risk of exposure to radiation has greatly increased. According to Ms Clark, “The lightness of Opaque means the surgeons can work through the list in comfort and safety.”
