Calmed at Nevill Hall

2nd April 2019

Pictured following the recent handover of a Calmed Insufflator supplied by Vertec Scientific to Nevill Hall Hospital, Abergavenny, are (from left): Senior Radiographer George Partridge, Superintendent Radiographer CT/MR Polly Watts, Senior Radiographer CT/MR Helen Dallyn, Vertec Product Specialist Gavin Adcock and Senior Radiographer CT/MR Caroline Ngatiah.

This system is one of three supplied to the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board. The Calmed CT1400 CO2 insufflator is designed to help examination of the bowel by CT colonography and features fully automatic operation throughout the scan. A unique single-use tube set which is fitted with a special balloon catheter transports the gas from the insufflator to the patient. The desired pressure is pre-set using touch keys, then checked and controlled throughout the procedure with two independent sensors.

Approximately 1500 CT Colonograms are performed in the three CT departments within Aneurin Bevan University Health Board. Polly comments,  “This new insufflator is proving easy to use, well tolerated by patients  and consistently provides optimum distension of the bowel.”
